Dog of the Day is Delayed

Sorry, feeling crappy, need to try to get a lot of sleep tonight. With a little luck I won’t end up dead sick during my first real vacation in over a year.

Dog of the Day: Fiji the Small Münsterländer

The first small Münsterländer we’ve had on here, though we had a possible mix a while back. And no, those are not heavy metal umlauts. I am assured by a very reliable source that her full name is ‘Madam Fiji Von Chacha.’

Incidentally, ‘small Münsterländer’ is kind of a misnomer, unless you count a dog that averages at about 45 lbs and can get as big as 60 lbs ‘small’. Me? I call that a pretty respectible Münsterländer.

I took over thirty pictures of Fiji. This is the only one where she stood still long enough that she wasn't a blur.

Dog of the Day: Utah the German Shepherd Mix

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that this guy is a German shepherd mix, from the markings. If his ears were floppier, I’d say he was a shepherd/Lab mix, but I’ve never seen ears like that on a dog that was half Lab. Autumn is stumped too. So this is a ‘I’m sorry!’ to Utah’s parents: we’re just as confused by your pup as you are, but whatever he is, he’s a pretty spiffy dog. If you ever find out what he is (via one of those genetic testing things) please do drop us a line in the comments and let us know.

Oh! And please, if you haven’t looked at the pictures I posted Saturday night, go look at them and then suggest a name for the puppy!

Two more pictures after the break.

Small paws, a lot daintier than a shepherd. Maybe an Italian Greyhound for the other parent?

Dog of the Day: Help Name This Puppy!

The gentleman and the pup below were sitting outside one of our local drinking establishments. And everyone who went by was stopping to pet the puppy, so naturally we had to too. But when we asked about the pup, we got a surprise: most people are happy to tell us the dog’s name, but may or may not know the breed. This guy knew the breed (part German shorthaired pointer, part Labrador retriever), but the puppy was so newly adopted that the family hadn’t yet decided on a name!

Well, I’m putting the word out to all my readers… all, what, five of you? 🙂 Suggest names for this pup in the comments section. The pup’s dad is going to come look at ideas, although no promises whether he’ll use any of them. Guess you’ll just have to come up with something so awe-inspiringly (aww-inspiringly?) appropriate that he’ll have to use it, right? [Edit: the pup is a girl, and my memory is just as weak as ever.]

Three more pictures, and of course the comments section, after the break.

If I had a puppy, this is what I'd do. Sit out in the sun and let people fawn over her when they walked by.

Double Dog Day: Old Home Day!

In the last week, I’ve run into four dogs who have been featured on DoSF. Not only that, they were all memorable enough dogs that I knew them right away. Given the sheer number of dogs in SF, and the relatively small number I’ve posted, and my totally awful memory, this is pretty unusual for me, so I’ve decided to celebrate by posting new pictures of two of the encore pooches. (The other two, sadly, I literally met in the middle of the street, while crossing in the opposite direction, hurrying to work. I took the time to tell the woman walking them that I had posted them, but I didn’t have time to take any more pictures. Aw, well, they got a pretty good number the first time.)

The first encore pooch for today is Wallace the Chihuahua mix:

Wallace the Fluffy chihuahua mix.

Look at that tail, and the coloration. Maybe he's half Aussie?

The second is this gorgeous (we guessed) golden/collie mix (although now that I’ve seen a couple of golden/collie mixes, I have even less idea what he is.)

Fluffy reddish-golden dog of indeterminate provenance

I've looked at a lot of dogs in the last nine months or so... I still have never seen a stare quite like this guy's.

Welcome back to DoSF, pups.

Dog of the Day: Corgi/Foxhound mix (?)

We’re not sure about this dog. I’m sure I talked to a guardian (or at least the person who was walking him at the time) but I can’t remember if they didn’t know what breed he was, or if I just forgot to write it down. In any case, our best guess is corgi mixed with some kind of hound, Autumn says maybe foxhound.

One more picture after the break.

Corgi/foxhound mix

I have six or seven pictures of this guy, and in every single one, the tail is a blur. (Of course, in a few of the, the rest of him is a blur too.)

Dog of the Day: Uni the German Shepherd/Italian Greyhound/Shar-Pei/Yorkshire Terrier

Wow. This gal is just about as mongrel as they come. (We didn’t guess at her ancestry: his guardian told me they had had her genetically tested, and ‘German shepherd/Italian greyhound/shar-pei/Yorkshire terrier’ was the result. Half German Shepherd, and various amounts of the others, I think.) And she’s one heck of an awesome dog.

[Edited to fix the gender. Mea culpa, as usual.]

One more picture, after the break.

German Shepherd/Shar-Pei/Italian Greyhound/Yorkshire Terrier mix!

Well, you can certainly see the German shepherd. Both in appearance and in attitude. And she's quite fast, so Italian greyhound isn't that huge a surprise.

Dog of the Day: German Shepherd/Australian Shepherd Mix

Autumn’s back! (She was gone for a few weeks for a festival back East, and then was back for around a day and a half (and I saw her for a few hours) and then she was gone for a festival a few hours from here. She actually got back on Saturday.

So, in celebration of her safe return, here is a picture of her hypnotizing a cute German Shepherd/Australian Shepherd mix. (We’re guessing about the Aussie part.)

Autumn and a half-German Shepherd/half-Australian Shepherd

Autumn is quite accomplished in the field of canine hypnotism. She can bewilder-a-beast at fifty paces.

Dog of the Day: Molly the Australian Shepherd/Labrador Retriever Mix

What a mix: smart as a whip, happy as a clam. You can see just how happy from the pictures: this isn’t just a dog that doesn’t need Prozac, this is a dog that is Prozac.

Also, I don’t know what is up with the name ‘Molly’. This is the third dog we’ve had so far on here with the name Molly, and I don’t think we even have another name shared between two dogs.

Two more happy pictures, after the break.

Happy Australian Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix

An expression I am more used to seeing on goldens. It reminds me of Doug, the golden retriever from 'Up': I have just met you AND I LOVE YOU!
