Dog of the Day: Rajko the Rhodesian Ridgeback/Gordon Setter

Neither Autumn nor I would ever have guessed that this guy was half Gordon setter, but apparently he is. Gordon setters are big super-long-haired dogs, none of which have been posted on DoSF. There’s one we see on a regular basis, but he’s always in a dog grooming store, and it’s so tough to get a decent picture through the glass.

Anyway, doesn’t this guy look powerfully built? Far as I know, neither Gordon setters nor ridgebacks are generally that muscular. Y’gotta wonder… maybe a pit bull snuck in while the Gordon setter was out for a walk one day.

One more (somewhat blurry) picture after the break.

The ears were super-soft. And he didn't seem to mind me petting them.

Double Dog Day: Nikita and Sandy, a Pair of Pits

A couple of American Pit Bull Terriers for you today. Two sweeties. And dammit, I forgot to ask their names. Oh well. [Edit: hooray, their mom found the blog and told me their names: Nikita and Sandy.]

Another picture, after the break.

Two American pit bull terriers

These two weren't just sweeties, they were also remarkably well-trained. They responded individually to commands after their names, and responded quickly and completely.

Dog of the Day: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Not 100% sure about this guy… could also be a regular King Charles spaniel, aka an English toy spaniel. I’m not as clear as I ought to be on the difference.

Is it just me, or does this guy look seriously disgruntled?

Second picture after the break.

King Charles cavalier spaniel

The 'ruby' ones (that's this color) are so pretty. But aren't cavaliers' ears usually flooflier than this guy's?

Dog of the Day: Mancha, the German Shepherd/Catahoula Leopard Dog Mix

Oopsie. I appear to have gotten my notes mixed up back in mid-June, and posted the wrong name and breed guess for this dog. It turns out the real Mancha is the guy on this page. And if you’re familiar with Catahoula leopard dogs, you will see the resemblance right away with this guy, but not so much with the one I mixed up with.

Sorry about that, pups. Hope nobody was scarred by the experience.

Two more pictures, after the break.

Catahoula/German Shepherd mix

We found this guy happily basking in the sun in the middle of the Sunset district. If you know San Francisco, you'll know just how unusual that is.

Dog of the Day: Sam the Bernese Mountain Dog

Another Bernie for today. And such a dignified one, too! Some of those expressions make me think that he may be the reincarnation of an especially virtuous elder statesman. Such dignified expressions, especially for a Bernie.

Three more pictures, after the break.

Bernese mountain dog

I think we've run into Sam a few times now, but it will never get old.

Dog of the Day: Daji the Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppy

Time for another puppy. Daji is a cute-as-a-button Rhodesian ridgeback, ten or eleven weeks old in these pictures. He’s still at that adorable ‘I’m not sure what I’m doing’ stage, but he definitely knows he likes his treats! (Incidentally, I think Daji is our first Rhodesian ridgeback.)

Daji’s humans have a blog of their own. Feel free to go say hello, if you like. It has a couple more pictures of Daji on it, if that’s any enticement.

Two more pictures after the break.

Rhodesian ridgeback puppy

Do a lot of ridgebacks have that white splash on the chest? I've never seen it before, but it's adorable.

Dog of the Month: Cecilia the Siberian Husky

Meet Cecilia. I only had maybe a minute’s exposure, but in that minute she completely swept me off my feet. I firmly believe that if I had been lucky enough to adopt this pup, my life (and, of course, Autumn’s) would be changed forever. Full of a lot more warm summer days, a lot more goofing off, a lot less stressing out. A life with the same problems, I’m sure… but maybe a life with less worrying about those problems, and more appreciating what we’ve got.

So, to the woman I found walking this dog: congratulations. You seemed to know what a special dog you had. I hope you two have a long and happy time together.

Two more pictures after the break.

Goofy husky

I didn’t write this down, so I’m just depending on my fallible memory, but I think I heard that Cecilia is two years old.

Double Dog Day: Hazen and Mike, the Not-Whippets

These two are the stars of their very own web site: http://www.imnotawhippet.com/

And, as you might have guessed from the title, they aren’t whippets. It was the first thing I came out with, too, and in punishment for my mistake (even though I immediately corrected myself: they are Italian greyhounds!) I was ferociously licked. Also forced to post them. I’m sorry to say that I didn’t get any great photos… they moved around a lot. There are better pictures at their site, though, and how could I not post a pair of pups with their own web site?

Since there are only two pictures, one for each of them, I’m sticking ’em both on the front page.

Whippet in urban camouflage

This is Mike. I guess urban camouflage is the latest thing in canine fashion.

Italian greyhound in urban camoflage

And this, if you can't tell by the collar, is Hazen. And Hazen, if you can't tell by the posture, is a sweetie.

Dog of the Day: Unknown Mix

I really don’t know about this guy. He’s brindled like a pit bull or a mastiff, but doesn’t look anything like either of them. And, although it only shows partly in this picture, he’s almost like an inverse corgi: he’s got short-ish legs, but he’s nearly as wide as he is long! And it’s not that he’s fat (or, at least, not just that he’s fat)… he’s broad. If a pug is a barrel with legs, he’s a quarter-barrel with legs.

No more pictures on this one, I’m afraid.

Unknown mixed-breed dog

Ah well, there's a place in the world for funny-looking dogs. This guy made me smile for fifteen minutes after I saw him.

Double Dog Day: Gigantic Newfoundland and Stunned Standard Poodle

I love these two. As far as I know, they’d never met… they were sitting at separate tables at the same outdoor cafe. But I can’t help but take the expression on the poodle’s face as some sort of commentary on the Newfie.

Two more pictures below the break.

Newfie and poodle

Newfies are awesome, but I think I like the astonished look on the poodle's face even more.
