Dog of the Day: Bubbles the Stratfordshire/Bulldog/Boxer Mix?

My notes are a little unclear on the breed mix, but they were very definite on the fact that Bubbles loves everyone, and doesn’t much like the muzzle. (Required when riding on Muni, sadly.) I ran into her a couple weeks ago, when I took this picture, and then again just today. Sadly, all the rest of the pictures I took didn’t come out, because of the poor lightning.

How can you resist those eyes? She kept trying to get people to take off her muzzle, or (failing that) give her a treat, or a skritch.

Roll of 28(+1) Day 9: A Tale of Two (Stuffed) Dogs

It’s probably about time I confessed something to all of you out there. I keep saying that Autumn and I don’t have a dog, but that’s not quite true. We actually have a whole bunch of dogs. It’s just that they’re all stuffed animals. (Ssh, don’t tell our landlord: he’s against us even having fish, so we’re honestly not sure how he’d react to stuffed animals.)

I’d like to introduce the two primary dogs in our lives: Weginald Waddley the Pembroke Welsh Corgi (originally named for an English MP, although his name has been mangled into near unrecognizability here) and Dame Weetabix (“Bixie”) of Snorgling-on-Axis.

Where did they come from? Well, several years ago, Autumn and I had been discussing what kinds of dogs we liked, and we both had agreed that corgis were awesome (and that we also loved Bernese mountain dogs, but that their lifespans were just too damn short.) And so when Autumn ran into Weginald at a thrift store, for $1, it was love at first sight.

Fast forward to this Christmas: Autumn had me make a Christmas list, and, as a joke, I listed ‘a Bernese mountain dog/corgi mix.’ Autumn’s mom went out and found a Bernese mountain dog stuffed animal and performed some ‘cosmetic surgery’, and voila… Bixie! (Go ahead. Tell me I’m pathetic. I dare you!)

Yes, Weginald is wearing a collar. With a purple tag. That says 'Weginald' on it.

DoggiEvent: SFSPCA Valentine’s Day Adoptathon, Friday & Saturday

How could you not love a Valentine’s Day adoptathon, where one of the main attractions is a puppy kissing booth?

Jackson Galaxy from Animal Planet will be there, too, as well as Ken Een of Frisco Tattoo, who will be doing pet-related tattoos for only $30 each. And I am assured that there is ‘plenty of chocolate’, although there might not be after I arrive!

Details are here.

Dog of the Day: “Puppy” the 10-year-old Husky/Lab/Samoyed/Aussie/Whaaaatever!

I don’t care what breed Puppy is: he’s an adorable, huggable, healthy dog. That’s what matters, right?

(Still flat on my back in bed. Back’s better, but still not happy.)

White Mixed-Breed Dog

I find dog ears endlessly fascinating, and feel a little sorry for floppy-eared breeds. They're missing out on such an amazing instrument of self-expression.

White Mixed-Breed Dog

Not sure what that expression is on him. On me it's "I just woke up, lemmee alone."

White Mixed-Breed Dog

Uh oh, here comes another one.

White Mixed-Breed Dog

The patented Dogs of SF NOSEBOMB! (Yes, I'm amused by every single one of these. Yes, that makes me easily amused. Any more questions?)

White Mixed-Breed Dog

Another inscrutable expression.

Dog of the Day AND Roll of 28+1: Baloo/Romeo Redux

I did something new to my back today. Once every two years or so, I end up with a tweaked lower back. Today I have tweaked my upper back, something I’ve never done before. Part of growing old, I guess, and I can handle it as long as it doesn’t become a regular occurrence. But as it is, I’m typing this while lying on my back, with my laptop balanced on my chest, hopped up on some thank-god-I-had-some-lying-around codeine.

So, low-effort post today. And what better than a repeat customer? I ran into Baloo and Romeo again just today, and, crippling back pain or no, I just had to get a couple more shots of them. So adorable. And Romeo is much mellower now that he’s starting to get used to city life.

German Shepherd/Corgi Mix and Yorkshire Terrier

Someone recently hypothesized in the comments that Baloo is part Swedish Vallhund. Could be, although that wouldn't explain the floppy ears. I don't even care, I just want to hug him.

Roll of 28(+1) Day 7: First Church of Christ

A picture from the First Church of Christ on California and Franklin. A very pretty building, and one that I pretty much never think about, because there are so many larger and grander churches and cathedrals in San Francisco, including one just a couple of blocks away.

Church Window, First Church of Christ, San Francisco

I broke my 'no-cropping' rule here, because the brickwork in the larger picture looked bizarre, to such an extent that staring at it made my head hurt. Still trying to figure out why.

Double Dog Day: Boo-Boo the German Shepherd and… (I forget!) the Malamute

Ran into these guys just out in front of my apartment building, in deep discussion with one of my neighbors. And of course, busybody that I am, I had to butt in and take some pictures. Hope I wasn’t too terribly annoying.

And of course we got the names of the two pups, but I didn’t record them fast enough and both Autumn and I forgot the malamute’s name. So pretty!

Alaskan Malamute

This is a 'please give me more attention I love attention' behavior. I can certify that it is effective.

German Shepherd

On the other hand, this is a 'I'm not so sure about you please don't get too near me' expression. It didn't work: mom had to warn me away.

Roll of 28(+1) Day 6: Chuck the Chuck

Something intentionally non-dog-related today. This must be one of the signs of the apocalypse. Fire, floods, famine, cats and dogs living together, and Whole Foods advertising $2 wine.

If you’re not familiar, the ‘Chuck’ they’re referring to is the famous Trader Joe’s ‘Two-Buck Chuck’, a wine with a very… distinctive flavor. Which is to say, it tastes a lot like someone took a very, very young wine (and I know nothing about wine, so when I say it’s young, you know it must taste like paint thinner) and diluted it with water. I must admit, I’m quite curious to see what Whole Foods has to compete with it. I’ll pick some up on the way home tomorrow or the next day and we’ll see what it’s like.

Chuck the Chuck

That's quite a ... violent looking emblem you guys have there.

Dog of the Day: Bull Mastiff Smooches

Treat this as a preview for the Golden Gate Kennel Club’s dog show. It’s going to take a while for me to go through the thousand or so pictures we took and pick out the eleven that aren’t blurry. (On the wish list for next year: an f1.4 50mm lens. It’s dark in there!)

Bull Mastiff

An imponderable for you: how many Chihuahuas can dance on the head of a bull mastiff?

Roll of 28(+1): Day 5

It’s funny, I’ve spotted more dog-related paraphernalia in stores in the last three months than I have in the entire prior two years. And it’s not like I’m suddenly looking for it… I’ve been doing this blog for pretty much that entire time. Maybe I’m out ahead of the curve here?
